Critical Mass
Oil & casein on canvas - 2012-25

As the headlines are riddled with chaos and war
I like to spend time imagining an alternative.

This painting started in 2012 during a small festival in Australia.
It traveled with me many places and experienced many iterations, 
slowly revealing what was already there.

It feels like something I have seen before.
I’ve been there and can remember what it smells like, 
the feeling of that light.
It’s a still, from when we’re in the snow-globe 
throwing a party, like we do.
Something is different though… it’s like we’ve reached a crescendo.

It’s critical mass —
100th monkey
…and all the star folks show up in their fancy vessels to witness the moment.

I wasn’t sure if I would ever finish this painting.
It’s beginnings were so raw… it started with oil pastel on a really rough canvas…
Eventually it got glued to wood and I finished it with oils and casein in 2025.
The story here would not let me go, and I just loved to think about it whenever I saw it tucked into a stack of abandoned paintings, so I knew it would eventually happen.
That I would ‘finish’ the painting enough to share it.

Maybe we’ll see each other again there one day… 
In the future past.
…it will seem so familiar,
